Are you destroying your teeth with bad habits without even realizing it? The nightmare of tooth loss does not have to come true. Follow these guidelines and it will help you to cleaner, healthier and whiter teeth.
1. Not flossing
Daily flossing helps to clear the plaque in between your teeth and this can prevent gum disease. Flossing is relatively easy and convenient and can be done any time but many patients don't realize that flossing at least once a day is just as critical to achieving and maintaining a healthy smile. Flossing may also help prevent gum disease and cavities.
Consuming acidic foods and beverages, such as citrus fruits, wine, tomatoes, soda and energy drinks can erode tooth enamel—the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic foods and beverages and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth!
3. Excessively bleaching your teeth
Excessive bleaching can increase tooth sensitivity. Before using an at-home bleaching product, talk to your dentist. He or she can advise you on proper teeth whitening products as well as which type of bleaching system to use that will give you the best results.
4. Not replacing your toothbrush often enough
Old toothbrushes harbour harmful bacteria that can cause infections. Toothbrushes should be changed every three to four months. It's also important to change your toothbrush after you've had a cold. Old toothbrushes don’t work as the bristles get damaged and are not effective in cleaning your teeth.
