Types of Dental Veneers

Dental Veneer Types

There are two types of Dental Veneers that we use at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic. One is Porcelain Veneers and the other is Composite Veneers. Porcelain veneers is highly reccomended as it is the latest technology, does NOT discolor over time and one can pre-determine the shape and color. Read below it find out the right option for you.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are usually the more expensive option, but the transformative effect they can have on a person’s smile makes them well worth the investment. The treatment will involve four appointments, with the initial preparation work being done with Dr Huson and the creation of the veneers taking place at our in house lab.

They are created specifically for your unique set of teeth and will be custom tailored to your individual tooth colour and shape. They are resistant to staining and are the ideal solution to more severe discoloration, chips or cracks, and they generally last much longer than other types of veneers.

At Silver Oaks Dental Clinic we highly recommend porcelain veneers. It is the latest technology.

Below is a before and after pic of porcelain veneers. The results are remarkable and you can see how porcelain veneers straighten and whiten teeth all in one go. This is a far more cost effective method than braces and provides quick results usually 3-4 appointments over a short period of time. This can transform your life and dramatically improve your confidence. Research suggests that improving your teeth can make you look 10 years younger.

Composite Veneers

We try and not use composite veneers has it discolors over time and you can’t pre determine the shape and color. It is also NOT resistant to staining. The big downside from composite veneers is that the finish often isn’t as good as you would get from porcelain veneers.

Regular cleaning and polishing of your porcelain veneers will keep them looking great, and as long as your daily dental hygiene is good they should last a long time.

We offer three types of Porcelain Veneers at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic

  • eMax
  • CEREC® Veneers
  • Zirconia

Dr Huson will analyse your teeth and then reccomend the best type suited for you. Chat to him about the various options during your consultation.

The cost of Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers Price

The cost of Dental Veneers is much more affordable in Durban South Africa than it is in other first world countries. The quality of the treatment done at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic is matched to the Harley Street Region of London, United Kingdom (where celebrities get their cosmetic treatments). Dr Roy Huson worked for over 17 years in the United Kingdom. All our products and services meet European Standards.

Getting porcelain veneers in Durban  is also well within reach to those residing in the country. The cost of living is lower in some cities than others. An example of this would be Durban. Coupled with year round alluring weather, it is a favored destination among locals. It is here that the cost of Dental Veneers is most affordable, and with access to some well-respected cosmetic dentists. The cost of Dental Veneers will also depend on the type of material used in the manufacturing process. As mentioned both composite and porcelain can be used, however at Silver Oaks we prefer porcelain. This does mean that getting them fitted will be more expensive but they do last longer, so re-fitment will not be an issue for quite some time. You do not want to invest less now, only to return to have them replaced. Dentist expertise will determine the overall Cost of Veneers in Durban. Choose a dentist who has performed a fair amount of veneer procedures and who has now mastered the art of giving patients a natural looking smile. Dr Roy Huson has placed in excess 1000 Veneers and worked under celebrity dentist Dr Joe Oliver in the United Kingdom. His expertise and qualifications make him the go to person for Dental Veneers. The total cost of veneers starts from R5500 per tooth and will have to be paid out of pocket. This is to say, that because it is classified as a cosmetic procedure, it is not covered as part of dental insurance plans or medical aid. We also offer flexible financing options and affordable monthly installments. Chat to Dr Huson about our medical financing options.

How Dental Veneers Are Applied

Dental Veneers Procedure

First Appointment - Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

This first step involves your active participation. Explain to Dr Huson the result that you would like. When you do come into Silver Oaks we will examine your teeth and check if dental Veneers are appropriate for you. Dr Huson will then discuss what the procedure will involve. You will be given a treatment plan based on your cosmetic needs. If you are happy with the initial proposal a study consult will be booked. At this appointment photos and models of your teeth and sometimes x-rays will be taken. This will allow Dr Huson to do a Digital Smile Design (DSD) on your teeth to plan the ideal outcome. It is very important to communicate your desires and expectations to Dr Huson. Due to the latest technology in Digital Smile Design you will always know what the end result will look like before the work is finalised.

Second Appointment – Firstly a cleaning and (if required) a teeth whitening will be done.

Third Appointment - Once that is completed you will come back for the third appointment where Dr Huson will prepare your teeth for dental Veneers. Guided templates and stents are used to ensure that the absolute minimal enamel is removed from your tooth surface. (Often as little as 0.1 millimeters or often none at all). Dr Huson will also remove any evidence of decay and carefully shape the tooth to correct any chips or gaps.

Before trimming off the enamel, you and Dr Huson will decide the need for a local anaesthetic to numb the area. Dr Huson will give you options for a pain free treatment. Next, Dr Huson will make a model or impression of your tooth. This model is sent to our onsite lab technicans, who will then custom make your Dental Veneers. It usually takes about 10 days for Dr Huson to receive the Dental Veneers back from the laboratory. You will be given temporary Veneers in the meantime. These temporary  Dental Veneers match the planned final Dental Veneers. This gives you a chance to see what it would look like in your mouth and show them to your friends and family before fitting your final  Dental Veneers. At this stage simple changes to your final Veneers can still be made.

Fourth Appointment - Bonding is carried out before the Dental Veneer is permanently cemented to your tooth, your dentist will temporarily place it on your teeth to examine its fit and color. You will be then be shown the Veneers and slight adjustments can still be made at this stage because we have an onsite lab. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the Veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched -- which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process. A special cement is applied to the Veneer and the Veneer is then placed on your tooth. Once properly positioned on the tooth, your dentist will apply a special light beam to the Dental Veneer, which activates chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden or cure very quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating your bite and making any final adjustments in the Veneer as necessary. Your dentist may ask you to return for a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks to check how your gums are responding to the presence of your Veneers and to once again examine the Veneer's placement. A follow up visit a couple of weeks later is necessary for Dr Huson to see if the Veneers are indeed a success. Even if it is felt that the Veneers have adapted neatly to the mouth, this visit should not be skipped.

March Case of the Month - Veneers and Crowns

Dental Veneers before and after

Our case of the month for March is Lynn's smile makeover. Lynn's teeth had worn down over the years causing them to fracture very badly and break. She was struggling to chew and felt very self conscious about her teeth.

When Dr Huson analysed her teeth he saw that her bite had over closed which gave her the appearance of having no teeth when she smiled.

Her treatment plan included Braces, Crowns and Veneers to perfect her smile. Lynn's bite was opened using orthodontics (Braces). This moved her teeth into a better position. Crowns and Veneers were placed to improve the function and aesthetics of her smile. It had also improved her lip and cheek support (to stop them from sagging).

She was given temporary Crowns to test the new positions and function of her teeth. This was also to give her a chance to approve the new look before the final ones were made.

Dr Huson has placed in excess 1000 Veneers - all with excellent results. He has worked under celebrity dentist Dr Joe Oliver in the Harley Street region of London. You are guaranteed work that is of the highest quality and we offer a money-back guarantee.
